September 2019 Newsletter

A special welcome to all members as we celebrate 61 years as a social organization to enrich women’s lives through hospitality events, interest groups, luncheons and travel.

Your LW Board met on August 14 to prepare for the coming year. I want to recognize the Board members, who worked so hard this summer to get us ready for our fall activities. Debbie Scrivner, Membership Chair, worked tirelessly to get the Directory ready for the September Board meeting.
We now have 118 members. Carol Beaumont and her Telephone Committee called members to get the dues in. Elaine Rutledge has organized the Fall Hospitality Coffee on Wednesday, September 18. I hope you will plan to attend. Sandy Berland has been busy making arrangements for all of our luncheons. Jan Gratch has lined up a great program for the fall luncheon. THANK YOU, ladies, for all your efforts. We appreciate you! And many thanks to the Executive Board: Charlene Nye, Judy Kostusik, Pegge Hudgins and Debbie Scrivner, for helping to put the budget together. Thanks to Jean Wise, our newsletter editor, for taking over after Premla Kumar’s many years of service.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

The September Board meeting will be at Highland Villas Clubhouse, 145th & Nall. Socializing starts at 9:15 a.m., meeting at 10 a.m. Melanie Smith and Martha Estrada-Robinson will provide refreshments.

Please put Wednesday, September 18 on your calendar for the Fall Hospitality Coffee, and bring a friend, neighbor or both! Our guest speaker will be Kathleen Morrow with the League of Women Voters, an organization formed in 1920 to help women take a larger role in public affairs after they won the right to vote. The League encourages informed participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and helps to influence public policy through education and advocacy. Kathleen will tell us about the League’s activities and answer questions. I’m sure that each of us will learn something to help us to be more informed voters.

Jean Wise has graciously invited us to her home at 4005 West 110th Terrace 66211 in Longwood Forest (light brown contemporary house, second house north of College Blvd. at the southeast corner of Buena Vista & 110th Terrace). Please arrive at 10 a.m. and enjoy sweets, fruits and coffee with friends who are ready to start the Leawood Welcomers fall activities. For more information, contact Elaine Rutledge, or (816) 943-0408

Don’t miss our first luncheon and an important hands-on program on Wednesday, October 16, at Mission Hills Country Club. Dr. Melanie Smith, emergency management expert, Park University professor and LW Board member will show us how to keep ourselves safe in our homes and how to prepare for emergencies and disasters. (More information later.) Send a check ($25) made out to Leawood Welcomers to Sandy Berland, 13800 W. 116th - #3414, Olathe, KS 66062.
